Rongai Route
The Rongai Route is one of the less crowded paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. It approaches Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side and is known for its beautiful scenery and relatively gradual slopes. A 7-day trek via the Rongai Route offers a well-paced ascent, allowing for better acclimatization and increasing your chances of reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro. Here's a general itinerary for a 7-day Rongai Route trek:
Day 1: Nale Moru Gate – Simba Camp
Elevation: 1,950m – 2,650m
Vegetation: Rainforest
Pick up from hotel drive to Kenyan boarder, Nale Moru Gate, where you'll register and meet your guides and porters. Trek through farmland and rainforest to reach Simba Camp, your first overnight stop. Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours of trekking.
Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp
Elevation: 2,650m – 3,450m
Vegetation: Moorland
Wake up early morning and get a good breakfast then you continue your ascent through the moorland zone, you will catch some terrific views of Kibo and get your first glimpse of the ice fields on the eastern crater rim. Pass by the striking giant Senecio plants characteristic of this area. Reach Second Cave Camp for your second night on the mountain. Duration: Around 3-4 hours of trekking.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp
Elevation: 3,450m – 3,600m
Vegetation: Semi dessert
After breakfast and packing, trek through increasingly sparse vegetation as you gain altitude. Enjoy panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding landscape. Pay attention to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sickness. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp for your overnight stay. Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours of trekking.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation: 3,600m – 4,330m
Vegetation: Semi dessert
After breakfast you start ascending to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated near the base of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's second-highest peak. This day helps with further acclimatization as you gain altitude. Take in breathtaking views of the rugged Mawenzi landscape. Duration: About 3-4 hours of trekking.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,330m – 4,700m
Vegetation: Alpine dessert
After breakfast and packing you begin your trek towards Kibo Hut, situated at the base of the Kibo crater. This is your final camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky as you approach the barren lunar-like terrain of saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Duration: Around 4-5 hours of trekking.
Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700m – 5,895m Peak – 3,720m descent
Vegetation: Stones scree and iced summit
Start your summit attempt in the early hours of the morning (usually around midnight). Trek through Gilman's Point (5,681m/18,638ft) to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain. Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours to the summit, and 5-6 hours of descent.
Day 8: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720m – 1,860m
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest zone to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificates and celebrate your achievement. Duration: Around 5-6 hours of trekking.
You will be taken dropped to the hotel
Depending on your flight schedule and departure point you will be transferred to the Airport for your journey home, safari, or a relaxing trip to Zanzibar Beach.
